Monica,
I can identify with the money aspects of not joining PofA while a
"starving student". Perhaps there should be a student membership where you
have to send in a copy of your student id and you get a reduced rate.
But being stuck in Iowa without a car is even more reason to join. Kind of
connects you to the puppetry world and can serve as an inspiration. I know
that for the 9 years I toured this country with the Greatest Show on Earth
the journal was a true lifeline to the puppetry world. Granted, I was not
"financially challenged" but there were LOTS of other things I could have
spent the money on. There was no way I could go to a festival ("What region
are you in?" "I don't know, what week is this?") or get any of the "normal"
benifits of joining a guild. Shoot, I was lucky if I could find a puppet
show to attend while we were in a city, though I did find many over the
years. I guess what I'm really saying is I understand, but think that
somehow we always manage to have the money for the things we really want or
think we need (another 6 pak of soda/beer?) so the PofA dues could always
be found/saved. It would be interesting in a couple of years of memberships
to see if you wistfully wish you had joined sooner. Glad you will be
joining soon and hope to see you at a fest.
And thanks for your contributions to the crit. I hope that you will get
enough out of PofA to feel like contributing there as well.

Christopher
