At least that is the term we've always used. I'm curious if there are other terms out there. I don't recall ever hearing any other than type such as airplane, T, cross or vertical control. The question I labor over is what to call the part of the marionette hanging on the strings. I prefer to call it the doll, but when I use that term around other puppeteers all *#/% breaks loose like its an insult to the art form. Some people refer to it as the marionette. That term is the sum of the parts: the control, the strings and the doll, by my logic. If the strings are cut what is left is a doll, no? Remove the control rods from a rod puppet, a doll? This is a question I've pondered for quite a while and would love to come up with acceptable terminology.
