RE: Sophie Arp
I've seen several spellings for Ms Arp (actually Mrs Arp - her husband was
the more famous (of course more famous because he is male-sculptor, Hans
Arp).
I was very interested in her puppets and I looked up her dates under the
spelling
Sophie Taeuber Arp 1889-1943 Swiss. Even today it is more difficult to track
down information on artists of the female gender. I know she worked with the
Swiss Marionette Theatre in Zurich founded around 1918. The World of Puppets
by Rene Simmen has some great pics of puppets from this theatre.
Question for scholars lurking out there.
Fred Schneckenburger worked in Zurich (is'nt that a great name?)
One source gives his birthdate as 1902 and another gives it as 1922.
Obvioulsy one is a typeographical error, I would like to know which one is
correct?

Taeuber is right on. I dug around in Dada archives for about two years and
rarely rarely saw it hyphenated with Arp. I don't know what you're looking
for, but you might want to check out Women In Dada MIT 1998 edited by naomi
sawelson-gorse.. I'm sure Sophie turns up quite a bit there, in fact I
remember one essay specifically about her partnership/ collaboration with
HUgo Ball and Arp. If you're looking for something specific, let me know, I
may have references.
