We use a system similar to this but with a tape player instead of mini
disc. It is a pocket remote available at Radio Shack or many larger
hardware store like HQ, Home Depot, Lowes, etc. It is a stop and start
system and uses radio rather than infared waves so you don't have to be "in
line" with the pick up for it to work. You do have to plan your stops and
starts so that you have a hand or elbow available to press the button
though. It could be easily modified to foot remote if that is what you
prefer, but since we are performing in a style that has us moving around a
stage and not always near the one spot that a foot remote would be we can
keep it in our pocket and unobtrusively press the button through the
material of our pants. The remote and pick up is less than $25. It is an
on/off remote intended for small appliances like lamps, tvs, etc. If you
look for one be sure you don't get the one that works as a dimmer - this is
no good for your tape, though we do occasionally use the dimmer type for
lights.
