Have you thought about buying textile paint, which does indeed keep the fabric flexible. As for additives, if you go to the textile paint department of your local craft store, perhaps they have an extender or other additive you could add to regular acrylics. With the advent of Homes and Gardens TV and Martha Stewart, craft ladies have sprung up all over America, so there must be something commercial you could add. As for rubber cement, I hadn't heard that one before, but since rubber cement is flammable, and not really good for the artist to use because of fumes, etc, I would personally not use it.
