Date: Wed, 03 Oct 2001 04:49:40 -0400 Joseph Campbell (spelling may be awry) has some amazing books centering on mythology and ritual, but with some great stuff to say about costume/puppet/masks in ritual. Check out Masks of God or Hero of a Thousand Faces. <br>------------------------------------------------------------> B Shur "I like finding out about th' local weather, but not going out in it!!"- Zippy ----Original Message Follows---- From: Brently <brentlymd-AT-black-hole.com> Reply-To: puptcrit-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu To: puptcrit-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu Subject: PUPT: Re: a hello and a help me please... Date: Tue, 2 Oct 2001 10:37:10 -0500 I'm mostly a mask maker, so I approach puppets through masks. What this means is quite involved, and I have only a few moments, but to distill the thought: masks reflect the spirit, puppets the soul. I have been working on "Trojan Horse" theatre that brings the folk in as entertainment and then reveals something hidden... something that addresses human suffering. To get to what you're inquiring about --> "the ways puppetry has been used in various cultures with regards to health/healing/disease, etc." <-- I'm also an anthropologist, and when I was doing my honors work I tripped over the medium of Theatre Anthropology. If you haven't discovered this yet, do check out the work of Richard Sheckner (spell?), Eugenio Barba, Victor Turner, and of course Peter Brook. They have extensively researched and developed theatre as a world voice and how it works within and without society, culture, and the individual. As to the specificity of using puppets to heal, I'll tell you that I have personally worked with artists who have found a tremendous release through puppetry. One friend has literally gone from nearly neurotically shy to being quite open and outgoing by working in large body puppets. There is also a lot of well documented work using neutral masks, and the head cloth masks, that enable an actor to go beyond personal ego and explore the nature of the geni-human. Must go, but hope to continue this conversation on the list. Brently Michael Davis, Director BrentlyMasks! Studios "Clothing For Your Face.
