Hi

Just come in on the end of this thread; on the puppet-making courses I have
been on in the Czech Republic we were told that the term "marionette" did
indeed originate in animated statues of The Virgin Mary - specifically that
wooden images, either kept in churches or paraded through the streets, had
jointed arms or heads that could be manipulated via hidden rods or strings
to give an untutored and unsophisticated congregation the impression that
the statue was actually being brought to life by divine power.  Just thought
I'd throw that in...
