A trick to get around this....., is to make the bend first (with a longer piece of wire), then do the cut to make the short piece on the end. If you plan ahead properly this can be done without any waste either (just make the wire is a lot longer than you need when doing the bends; then the part that is cut off can be used for something else). It's just a lot easier to bend when you have some length to work with. The piano tuning knots I mentioned earlier were always done with longer pieces of wire, and cut after the knot was tied. Otherwise it would have been impossible to work with.
