hi all
this was a fantastically informative bunch of responses... had little luck finding piano wire in time, and ended up using a light twisted cable with about twelve thin steel wires wound into a tight springy bunch. worked pretty well, but was a) difficult to cut, b) difficult to seal the ends (ouch!) and c) heavier than I would have liked. I'll head down to the music store for some guitar strings for this week's worth of shows, though.
thanks again!
emily
