Seem to be a cultural history of >puppets, their symbolism, etc. Has anybody read it or know anything >about it? Preston I saw a copy of it at the new Drama Book Store. It was there in the midst of their pitiful collection of puppetry books, so of course I dived for it. However, after thumbing through it I put it right back. $50 for a treatise on artificial life forms (automatons, robots, golums, etc, and, incidently, puppets) with out a single reference to a practicing puppeteer, living or dead. Ms. Nelson's book might be of interest to performance studies mavens-- it serves up the lit crit lingo pretty thick. But it's not much use for anyone interested in puppet history. Doesn't even have any pictures. Oh well, great title though.
