The Bamboo Princess is an ancient Japanese myth, which tells of an unusual
child discovered in the hollow of a bamboo stalk. Bamboo is a symbol of
purity, humility and endurance. Through these qualities, this mystical child
influences all whom she meets, bringing joy and sorrow, laughter and tears.
The Bamboo Princess is performed by Anna Vargas with recorded music by the
Inoue Chamber Ensemble.

Anna Vargas, a member of Puppeteers of America, has been an active puppeteer
for the past sixteen years. Ms Vargas has worked with a variety of puppet
styles: hand puppets, hand and rod, and silk marionettes, and has designed
and handcrafted all of the components of her productions. She has built,
directed and performed twenty productions. The Bamboo Princess is her first
shadow puppet production. Much of the work for Bamboo Princess was developed
at the O’Neill Puppetry Conference hosted by the Eugene O'Neil Theater Center
in Waterford CT. In this production, Anna is assisted by her youngest
daughter Sophia.

The Inoue Chamber Ensemble (ICE) was formed in an effort to sustain the
momentum of the 1982 UN Special Session on Disarmament. ICE has completed
six USA-Japan concert tours performing in twenty-two Japanese and American
cities. In 1995, ICE concluded its Third International Peace Concert Series
and Tour, dedicated to Japanese-Americans for their contribution towards
world peace. The Bamboo Princess had its musical premier at the Weill
Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in 1988. Kazuko Inoue is the founder and
director of ICE.

Kazuko Inoue commissioned the music for The Bamboo Princess with a grant from
The New York State Council of the Arts, and the New York City Department of
Cultural Affairs. It was composed for traditional western string
instruments in combination with the Japanese koto and flute.
