SUMMER WORKSHOPS AT
THE KO FESTIVAL OF PERFORMANCE
in Amherst, Massachusetts, USA

July 8 -13 and/or July 15 - 20
GIANT PUPPETS AND PARADE CREATURES with
German Puppeteer and Maskmaker SEBASTIAN ROSER

Learn to make simple but impressive rod puppets using the extraordinary
papercut or paper sculpture method developed by Professor Albrecht
Roser. The technique allows an incredible range of movement and expression,
but aims to be lightweight and accessible to those without a degree in
engineering! These same paper techniques will also be used in making masks.
The study of performance techniques and "Group Puppet Dynamics" will
prepare the group for participation in the 2nd Annual Midsummer Parade: A
Topsy-Turvy Celebration of the Arts in Amherst. The work is specifically
geared for professional puppeteers, actors/theater professionals, visual
artists, as well as teachers of all kinds of arts. For pictures of Roser's
work visit www.puppets-on-demand.de

July 22 - 27
THEATRE AND SOCIAL CHANGE: Theatre in Community with
New Orleans Performer and Educator KATHY RANDELS
Theatre allows us to release and exchange collectively. Theatre can be
healing to whatever community we live in or work with: neighborhoods,
schools, churches or businesses. This workshop, with ArtSpot Production's
Kathy Randels, leads participants through a theatrical process that can be
brought back to their home communities. Based on Augusto Boal's "Theatre
of the Oppressed" and Michael Rohd's "Hope is Vital," participants will
work together on theatre exercises that provoke dialogue within our
communities, ultimately leading to healing within those communities.

July 29 - August 3
THE ACTOR & THE MASK with
Dell'Arte Company Co-Artistic Director JOAN SCHIRLE
To play in a mask highlights the necessity of clarity, specificity, and
projection of one's internal spirit. Joan Schirle's approach to mask
performance uses 15 simple concepts by which the actor can approach the
craft of masked or unmasked performance. Through the mystery of the mask as
well as the freedom it offers, the actor can make discoveries about what
the audience sees, about play, about the articulate body, and the enjoyment
of seeing with one's own eyes through the face of another. Technique and
improvisation.

August 5 - 10
MULTIMEDIA & SITE-SPECIFIC PERFORMANCE with
Cypher Collective Artistic Directors AMY BAXT & ALEX HEILNER
In this six-day intensive, participants will question a fundamental basis
of theater, as we throw away the script, and learn to develop performance
ideas based upon our surroundings, and the tools at our disposal. Working
with projected imagery, found sounds, our bodies, the landscape, and our
local history, we will create scenes and narratives that could never have
been imagined with a pen and paper.

Each workshop is $300 with the exception of the Giant Puppet workshop where
there is a $100 discount for taking both weeks.
