Deborah: With your education background, have you heard of the Reggio Emilia philosophy? It's funny, but on that listserv, we were just talking about all the uses for sticks.

responding to Andrew: Wow! spending non puppet time exploring fields and
forest nearby is FABULOUS and could be one of the best things to do with a
child. Especially making stuff out there - building a "camp"/lean-to was one
of my most favorite things I did with my brothers as a child. and the
construction process was the best part. collecting sticks and leaning them
agains a tree or horizontal branch kept us happy and thoroughly engrossed for
hours.
Now, as an artist with education background I advocate exposure to lots
of materials with only basic instruction as very mind-expanding for kids.
one of my favorites was mixing a batch of plaster and having kids drop it by
spoon onto aluminum foil. When it sets and dries a bit - its so fun to watch
it suck up water color paint . Then later you can attach a magnet to the
back and use it on the refrigerator - or just stick it to a wall..
Also with a child: mix food color into spackle, then they can spread it onto
a chunk of wood (very fun) then press found objects into it - like nature
objects from "above mentioned field and woods" - also stones - beach glass,
etc etc
play play play
