Joan & I first started using latex in 1964, and I know that others particularlyJane Phillips were using it at the same time, so I guess it goes back yonks before that.
In those days we bought the big tins direct from Dunlop, the manufacturers, and I recall that we had to mix two different grades to get the consistency we wanted. 
Strange to tell that some of those early heads still survive, but others made in the 1970's have perished or are on their way out.
