Date: Thu, 25 Apr 2002 23:00:09 -0700 Subject: PUPT: For your amusement. On Friday I started rehearsals for Little Shop of Horrors. Yes again. We had rented the plants to a Middle School, and they didn't have any students who could lift the thing so they hired me to perform. That's right. I'm performing in a Middle School production of Little Shop. The fellow who is doing the Voice is approaching it like it's Grunge. Which is kindof interesting, except that I can't tell when he's gone up on his lines and when he's just mumbling for effect. Enunciation is apparently not part of the grunge scene. Seymour can't sing a note but- is bright enough to know this and speak-sings ala Rex Harrison. If Rex Harrison were thirteen and American... Anyway the kid is actually doing a remarkably good job of selling the songs considering that he can't sing them. Yesterday- whoo boy - yesterday we did our invited dress rehearsal for the third grade. I was a little worried about how they would take all of the killing, but needn't have been concerned. Right after "Get It" they all had to leave because it was time for lunch. Who in their right mind schedules an hour and a half show at 11:00 knowing that lunch is at 12:00? They seemed to like what they saw at any rate. The parent audience tonight was something else. They loved everything. It was a little humbling to see these kids working their hearts out, turning in a very mediocre product, and hearing better audience responses than any I've seen any other production get. I knew the show was funny, but these people got every joke and belly laughed for all of them. It's a fun break anyway. And in case you are wondering. The run of the show is two and a half performances long. We closed tonight. -- Mary Robinette Kowal Other Hand Productions http://www.otherhandproductions.com --- Personal replies to: Mary Robinette Kowal <maryrk-AT-earthlink.net> --- List replies to: puptcrit-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu --- Admin commands to: majordomo-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu --- Archives at: http://lists.village.virginia.edu/~spoons
