It would be fascinating to study it's use in indigenous cultures from which it originates. I believe it came to Europe from Asia where it was used as toys and sealants. Like most plastics/rubbers -- it was a novelty until its infinite uses were discovered. And like most things, the native people who nurtured and developed its uses have received exploitation in return. Does anyone know the history and environmental impacts of rubber plantations and manufacture? I'm sure it's not a happy story. It would be good to know if there are sources which are more humanitarian & ecologically friendly.

On a happier note, I finally saw "Being John Malkovich (spell?)" and YIPPEE! was it fantastic. I don't think I've ever seen such fantastic marionette work in cinema. I must check old entries on the list to read the discussion -- which must be there.

Joan & I first started using latex in 1964, and I know that others particularlyJane Phillips were using it at the same time, so I guess it goes back yonks before that.
In those days we bought the big tins direct from Dunlop, the manufacturers, and I recall that we had to mix two different grades to get the consistency we wanted.
Strange to tell that some of those early heads still survive, but others made in the 1970's have perished or are on their way out.

A friend asked me when latex was first used for puppet heads, etc.. I don't know.
I know I'll get an answer from puptcrit.

    Thanks,
