I've performed for "fringe festivals" in different places: Singapore, for example has the main Performing Arts Festival, but the local shopping centers, department stores, country clubs, etc. sponsor venues for the "fringe." We've always been paid, although some may want to be exposed by performing reduced fees or free. Edinburg has a large fringe festival, you self produce and charge what you want during the well-respected festival. During the 1984 Olympics, the Fringe festival featured some of the best companies in the world...it was the first time for "Cirque du Soleil" in the US (I believe) and look where it took them!!
