Subject: Re: PUPT: Musical saws Date: Sun, 7 Apr 2002 23:10:10 -0400 No experience, specifically, but I have some impressions: Generally on using metal things as musical instruments I do a dangle & tap test in the hardware stores, which you can do less conspicuously than w/ violin bow- hold the object as loosely as possible, preferrably with one thumb and finger. Then use a coin or a key to tap on it and see how pure and sustained the ring of the thing is. In the case of a saw I would ammend the idea by saying hold the thing as tightly as possible and tap. ...though, I confess, I hardly even know what you're referring to - do you bow the thing and bend it for different notes? I would look at the way the handle is affixed and think of how it's going to respond to a workout. If you're in the Maryland or DC area, I can do the bow testing for you while you pretend not to listen in the next aisle.
