The Tonda Traditional Bunraku Puppet Troupe of Japan, a troupe near Kyoto that is a "Designated Intangible Cultural Treasure" and whose origins date from the 1830s, may be touring next spring. (They had planned to be touring this fall, but we may have to delay it to spring 2003.) I think they could be convinced to drop by Phoenix. Next year they may come with enough outside funding to keep local costs down--we're working on that. They previously toured the US last fall and in 1999.

The head of the troupe, a seventh-generation puppeteer, is also available to conduct master classes and workshops on Bunraku puppetry in the US at various times throughout the year, if anyone would be interested. Because the troupe is goverment supported, his costs can be very reasonable.

Our own Bunraku troupe here in Kentucky (trained in Japan by the Tonda troupe) might also be available next spring.

For more information and photographs, please take a look at the Tonda Puppets web page at the following URL: <http://www.asianinterstage.com/tonda/> http://www.asianinterstage.com/tonda/

Please let me know if you are interested or have any questions.

Hello, everyone!

The City of Phoenix is opening a Japanese Tea Garden at a park across the street from our theater in April of 2003. They would like to have a traditional Japanese puppet performance at the opening. We might also be interested in hosting shows for 5 days. They would prefer to find someone already living in the western United States to keep costs down. Anyone know anyone?

Thanks!
