We invite you to join us in a week -long workshop in pageant puppetry culminating in a community celebration of the Summer Solstice and the feast of Saint John the Baptist. Collaborate with international and local artists (beginners welcome!) to create an event that pays tribute to the traditions of ritual celebration high in the Italian Alps in the small Piedmont village of Morinesio.

Master puppet designers Alex Kahn and Sophia Michahelles will guide you through the production of the pageant. Drawing inspiration from the lives and history of the village, as well as local traditions of the Summer Solstice, known in Italy as the feast of San Giovanni Battista, you will work closely with the group to develop a Procession of Light on the eve of the solstice, and a Pageant of Life the next day. This is a hands-on workshop where you will learn how to construct giant puppets, banners, lanterns and musical instruments to be used in these events.

The workshop will be hosted by Christa Gaebler at Casa dei Fiori, a newly restored complex of traditional stone houses. Guests can savour the tastes of early Italian summer through the cooking of chefs Jessica Bard and Christa. Preparation of ritual foods for the Pageant will include activities such as visiting the local cheese farm and helping to bake bread in the communal wood-fired oven.

The puppet workshop, conducted in English, will run from June 16th to 23rd with processions and performances on June 21st and 22nd. Reservations are limited to 14 places.
