Subject: PUPT: Hello from Atlanta 2002

Atlanta, June 22, 2002

Don't know if others are giving reports, but the Festival Atlanta 2002 is
a real gem...Virtually all the performances have been excellent...the
cameraderie outstanding....some 35 countries represented..about 350
registrants. The 60-member Center of Puppetry Arts staff has done a more than
outstanding job in all aspects of the Festival. Only North American
puppeteers have been invited to perform. Most have performed at PofA and
Regional Festivals, and most have been UNIMA-USA Citation Winners.
Accommodations are excellent, the schedule is relaxed and catered food is OK.
The purpose of Atlanta 2002 is to host the Executive committee of UNIMA,
the Directors of the various UNIMA centers from around the world. It is
especially interesting for me, as I've performed in many countries
represented and am renewing many old friendships. For many foreign visitors,
this is their first visit to America. Some representatives were denied visas
due to their country of origin...Iran, for example.
Partial list of performances: The Body Detective by Jon Luwig, Center
for Puppetry Arts, Romanti Life of Everyday Objects by Patti Smithsonian, The
Yellow Dwarf by Carter Family Marionettes, Befriended by the Enemy by In the
Heart of the Beast Puppet Theater, Wonderful World of Puppets by Jim Gamble,
Emperor's New Clothes by Drew Allison, The Star Keeper by Theatre de l'Oeil,
Tea at the Palace by Puppetmongers, B.B. by Great Small Works, Velvetvill by
Paul Zaloom, Beauty and the Beast by National Marionette Theater (Syrotiak),
Toy Theatre Peony Pavilion by Chinese Theatre Works, What Fools These Mortals
by Fred Curchak, African Tales of Wisdon by Akbar Imhotep. Also are the
obgliatory parties, receptions, meetings, etc. Atlanta is most
supportive.... Weather is perfect.
Vincent Anthony is to be given highest marks for directing and producing
this top-notch Festival. Perhaps a documentary video will be made
available.... Respectfully, Jim Gamble
