Scott,   here's another idea for you.  If you have a good budget, you could 
make it a BIG inflatable puppet.   There are companies who do custom 
inflatables, then a team of puppeteers in black could operate the legs to 
make it walk, and another to move the trunk around....they could design the 
head and neck inflatables separately and then join them with rope, so the 
head can be moved around by a rod easily.   Another advantage is storage, 
just deflate it.
