Subject: PUPT: Re: Re: Brief bio of Olive Blackham Date: Wed, 26 Jun 2002 23:21:13 +0100 This is a multi-part message in MIME format. Olive Blackham was Director of Roel Puppets and began her career in puppetry in a small experimental marionette theatre called "The Ark" which was established in an attic in Kings Heath, Birmingham (England). In 1932 the theatre moved to the Cotswolds and set up in the granary of Roel Farm hence the new name. Roel Puppets operated from 1932 - 1961 and was a mainstay of the British Puppet community performing marionettes, glove puppets, rod puppets and shadows. Olive was also author of 'Puppets into Actors' (1948) and 'Shadow Puppets' (1960). Hope this helps. Michael Hon. Archivist British Puppet and Model Theatre Guild. ----- Original Message ----- From: will stackman To: puptcrit-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu Sent: Wednesday, June 26, 2002 11:03 PM Subject: PUPT: Re: Brief bio of Olive Blackham I've been watching the British Puppetry lists for more info, but I found the following in a local newspaper profile prepared last February on the occassion of her 103 birthday. Ms. Blackham was born on Jersey, had a rustic studio in the Cotswolds from which she produced marionettes, which she performed on pre-WWII BBC televison and toured. Some of these figures are on display in the Museum at Battersea, South London. In 1960 she published "Shadow Puppets", a handsome book which can still be found in various libraries. It's no longer in print. In retirement, she was living in Malvern Wells in Worchestershire, England. Her younger brother who's approaching 100 lives nearby. Maybe the British Model Theater Guild can tell us more. _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com --- Personal replies to: "will stackman" <profwill66-AT-hotmail.com> --- List replies to: puptcrit-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu --- Admin commands to: majordomo-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu --- Archives at: http://lists.village.virginia.edu/~spoons
