I've used a regular electric hair shaver (from a beauty supply store - 
Osterizer, about $60.) to trim the fleece - time consuming, but very 
successful.  Also, use very little agitation in the process of dyeing and 
you'll have less pilling - the fleece takes the dye very quickly, so not much 
agitation is really needed.
Maybe other people have dyeing suggestions that could be helpful?
