This discussion should actually tie well with the previous one on puppetry, theatre, acting. I really believe that there is a strong tie between puppet and puppeteer, that something takes place (call it magic, some psychological phenom, whatever) between them in the act of coming to life. The further away from each other the two become the more tenuous that connection becomes. The "ultimate disguise" becomes nothing more than an automaton window dressing, I believe, when ultimately reduced to bits and bytes, no matter how clever the outfit. IMHO.
