It's important, however, to keep in  mind that animation, thus Shrek and
Final Fantasy, is a perfectly valid form of movie making and has been for
decades. The kind of story told using animation would usually not work using
live action or puppets. Not just because of the technical difficulties, but
because there are bits of silliness that would just not be acceptable for
any other media. Just try to imagine the opening sequence to Shrek done with
puppets. With animation, even the mud had personality, something that
wouldn't have been possible using puppets.
