Actually, I'm not sure that's entirely true. The animators tried very hard
to put irregularities in the features of the characters. On the CU you could
even see moles and freckles. You probably noticed the lack of facial
movement. The funny thing is, that the Shrek animators had developed a new
program that build the characters using a realistic facial muscles, while FF
concentrated on texturing. If the two had gotten together, which no doubt
they will in future projects, both would have been crazy real! The only
place where CG threatens puppetry is when dealing with live actor type
projects. I just hope that CG people will remember that making a character
real is more that texture, and puppeteers will continue to play a role in
working out movements for the animators to translate into data.
