I, for one, believe that it doesn't assume that someone at a "lofty level" has nothing in common with their audience. Your statement, Alice, seems to say that, automatically, audiences are not already raised up. I find it somewhat patronizing. I never think that audiences need to "rise to my exalted view." I expect to find them there, and voila! there they are. Why inject this air of classism?
