Hi!
One more thing about the red rosin paper method... Mark mentioned the 
wallpaper paste and yellow wood glue-  I really love a slight variatin to the 
yellow wood glue - its the "exterior grade" carpenters glue (its got a 
brownish hue when you spot it on the shelf).  I like it BECAUSE its got wood 
fiber in it - great texture  -with "tooth" so it accepts paint very nicely.
