Dear Karen,
Of course the Bil Baird book is the bestest, but I rush to defend McPharlin because he is one of my favourite authors.  If you would like to find out about the puppeteers themselves and some of what went on backstage then he is certainly not so dry as you contend.  In the book you mention, his chapter ''The Odyssey of the Royal Marionettes' is full of excitement and scandal.
That book is in my top ten puppet books, and so is Baird.
I would be interested to know what your top ten are.
