Try Oriental Trading Company. They have heavy duty plastic straws for 
Balloons. I use them for shadow puppets all the time in schools. Very 
sturdy,  and cheep they come in 18" and 24" I think.. You can staple 
through them. They last a long time but are by no means permanent.

rods for Indonesian style shadow puppets.  Anyone know of a source?
