Oooh!! A problem. I love problems like this.

I think you're totally right not wanting a dead puppet
- In my honest opinion, even some solutions I can
think up - stringing limbs up so they dangle
unattended - create zombie puppets.

I don't know how fragile your puppet is, but perhaps
you could recruit an responsible audience member?? (an
experience that might live in their memory their whole
life!!)

OR - you can call upon the powers of imagination - and
Banish the dragon far far far away from the stage
because you are worried about it breathing on the
audience and burning off their hair!! Everyone will
think it has gone to the balcony, except kids who
might try crawling over seats to see the dragon.

Similarly, you could make a HUGE deal of telling the
dragon How to Get Off the Stage. Perhaps the dragon is
scared of humans/the audience and begs you to let it
just hide in the wings?

You could use lighting too - if you make the room dark
enough, and the stage bright enough, people will
forget about the puppet and focus on the stage.

Just some thoughts.
Good luck
