If they don't tell you upfront then you can complain that things are outside of the job description. The fact is that EVERY job in theater has a dress code. The vast majority of puppetry jobs require you to do hard labor, wearing things that frequently stink from sweat. If it's a touring company you will probably be required to drive a van, carry equipment (wearing 40+ pounds) into buildings, and wear a costume. If one wants to avoid jobs like that it is wisest to ask for a full copy of the job description before applying.
