I posted about that one model, Numark Rackmount CD player CDN15. Was
refered to http://www.etronics.com where it was priced at $160, much
cheaper than the other place I found. But, I haven't a clue where to find
any one that is battery powered with these features.

If I didn't find any with the features we wanted, I was going to consider
one of the CD players that have little remotes wired to the headphone line.
This, at least, allows us to put the remote at an easy place to reach it.
The cheapest I have seen that kind was around $50 - those are just the
bettery quality portable "walk man" type sold at Wal-mart or Circuit City.

Another option, which I decided not to persue was the mini-disk players.
They were hot for a while, and are apparently still used a lot in theater,
but I think they are a dead format. CD burners and MP3 players have taken
over their potential market. I I am told that many consumer level MD
players have the autopause feature, and I suspect that may be your best
place to search for something with auto-pause or (single play) in a battery
operated player.

I should mention another thing, which someday may be a good solution.
Some of the palm-top type Personal Digital assistants can now play MP3
files. These are small, rugged players. But, creating something with the
play-pause features that a puppeteer would need would require some
programming. There are even lighting controlers that can plug into a palm
computer... but again no sound integration. Maybe someday someone
technically minded and with time on their hands will create a program like
that, just with us puppeteers in mind.
