Chinese Shadow Puppet: Cue Jue (Hell) This is a Chinese (Hubei Province) shadow puppet standing 11 high and 4 inches wide of Cui Jue, one of Hell's Judges. A character in the "Journey to the West." He is responsible for the book of death and also deciding whether one is sent back to earth (reincarnated) or punished in hell. Each person on heaven and earth has his/ her name written in this precious book, determining when one's present life has expired. This is a very old shadow puppet, and has been thoroughly used/ played with. It was in action during the early Qing Dynasty and is estimated at over 200+ years old! It is made of ox hide (extremely thick cut), which is tanned and stretched to a semitransparent state then cut, pierced, and then colored using natural sources. Puppet is in good condition but does have some wear (flaws), which is only natural from a piece this old. This puppet is part of a larger set, and I will be listing these puppets on ebay over the next few months. Winning bidder pays $6.00 shipping and handling cost (from China).
