Subject: PUPT: Cell phones?

I am about to take a trip, and decided it would be wise for me to get a
cell phone. I thought my fellow puppeteers might be a good group to ask for
a recommendation. I'm sure some of you are regular cell-phone users, but I
will want to have one for when I take an occasional trip out of town.

A friend recommended trackphone.com which allows you to just pre-pay what
you want, and includes the phone in the deal. Then you buy more time as you
need it. However, the lowest amount is a $18, 30 minute plan. This seems to
be for anywhere to anywhere they have coverage. That's around 60 cents a
minute and the card will expire after 6mos. While I am traveling, I figure I
may use about 60 minutes. So far that seems to be the cheapest way to get a
phone for only occasional use.

ATT wanted to sell me a 1 year contract at about $39/mos ... definitely
out of the question.

  Any other recommendations?
