There is a bit of evidence in different Latin American
countries, and in the US, regarding the pre-Columbian
use of articulated/manipulatable figures.

I'll need a little time to double check the
bibliographic citation, but there is definitely a book
that talks about Native American practices in the
United States; I have used it in my own research. Paul
McPharlin's book on puppetry in the Americas talks a
little about animated figures of aboriginal peoples,
as well.

A friend of mine in Chile has done extensive research
on the history of puppetry in Chile, and has found
evidence of manipulatable figures (on strings or
poles) among the Selk'i'man, Ayamara, and Mapuche
peoples.

I don't have access to my puppetry bibliographies at
the moment (I am working away from home), but if
you'll e-mail me privately, I will try and send you a
copy when I can get to my files.
