There is an interesting  chapter ("Titeres del tiempo pre-hispanico") on 
pre-Colombian puppets in Piel de Papel, Manos de Palo, the history of 
Mexican puppet theater by Sonia Iglesias Cabrera and Guillermo Murray 
Prisant.
