Subject: PUPT: Attachment Stripping
Date: Fri, 13 Jun 2003 12:50:44 -0400 (EDT)

Dear All,

The latest virus technology has freaked me out, and I have done something
I never dreamt of doing on this list: installed attachment stripping.
The way this particular attachment-stripper works is that if the given
message has a plain-text section, it reduces the message to that section and
throws away everything else. If the message has no plain-text section but has
an HTML section, it attempts to extract the plain-text portions from that HTML,
and reduces the message to that de-HTMLized HTML. If it cannot find anything
that it can reduce to plain text, it replaces the body of the message with
a complaint that it couldn't find anything interpretable.

The thing is, the latest flavor of viruses -- such as the Bugbears -- attach
themselves to perfectly normal messages, and even if the affected messages
bounce to the listowner (the Spoon Collective) for approval because they look
fishy to our mail filter, it is only a matter of time before I, or anybody
else doing the weekly administration for the list, makes the mistake of
deciding that such a message looks like a perfectly legitimate list response,
and forwards it, virus and all, to the list.

If you have a piece of HTML, or pictures, or anything else of the nature of
an attachment that you want the list to see, send it to me (ma-AT-panix.com)
or to the Spoon Collective (spoons-AT-lists.village.virginia.edu) and I will
make it available.
