I'm very happy to hear that Robert Smythe has found the works of LeCoq, Decroux, Feynman, Bass, and LaPortier to be quite useful to his work. That's great! It seems to me that theory is valuable to the extent that it becomes useful to our understanding of what we are doing, and also that each of us will value different ideas in different ways (for me Kleist, Craig, Proschan, and Schumann have been enlightening). But I would like to add that developing theory and criticism is not some rarefied practice, because we all have our own de facto theories and critical perspectives which we use all the time. Maybe we all should write such things down and make our own contributions to the ongoing dialogue of the past few centuries. john bell --- StripMime Warning -- MIME attachments removed --- This message may have contained attachments which were removed.
