I have found that using Kraft paper (90 pound weight or "substance")(grocery 
bag material)  and Titebond yellow carpenter's glue makes a very durable and 
hard surfaced layering material. 

Recent experience in attempting to push pins through the hardened paper 
layers (3 or 4) reveal that the resulting "shell" is quite dense and durable. I had 
to use a very sharp awl.
