I have to agree with Mathieu on this, building your own is worth more than you can imagine--the sense of creation, ownership, and just becoming the character as you build.  Plus, it is yours, not someone else's for copyright and so on.  There are a number of books on how to make such characters, foam/fur, etc.  And you have a resource right here on puptcrit to ask questions.
