Subject: Re: PUPT: Ultracal vs. Plaster

We're using hydrocal to make molds for neoprene -- and having some severe bubble issues... the current theory is that it's cause it's insanely humid, we're on a tight schedule and therefore aren't drying the molds enough before casting with the neoprene.
Anyone have any idea whether this might be the case?

I use half hydrocal and half plaster (when I have it) and neoprene sets
up very well. Best to put the mold out in the sun for a few hours to help the
cast set and cure while still in the mold. Also "green" or fresh molds
cause the neoprene to take longer to set, because there is residue moisture in the
plaster. Very dry molds work best, but all of us are in a hurry, so heat as
well as wind help accelerate the setting/drying process.
My daughter sculpted a 5 inch head yesterday morning, (use water base
clay) I made a three piece mold in about 2 hours, we poured the neoprene after
the mold sat in the sun for two hours. I pulled the cast out this morning. It
was perfect. It was 72 degrees and bright sunshine. Jim Gamble
