Subject: PUPT: Wandering Puppeteers
From: Dmitri Carter <dmitri-AT-nwpuppet.org>

As the wonderful poem John shared has evolved into a broader conversation on
wandering puppeteers, I thought I would take this opportunity to mention the
recent publishing (October release) of Virginia Pilegard's newest children's
book - "The Warlord's Puppeteers" which is dedicated to Yang Feng and a
couple of Virginia's friends (sorry, I don't remember their names). This
story follows the adventures of a puppeteer and his daughter while touring
in China during the Tang Dynasty.

Originally, to be about hand puppeteers which lead Virginia to seek out Yang
Feng, the first thing he pointed out was that marionettes would be more
accurate for that historic period. Yang Feng also provided other ideas and
suggestions over the past couple years and on occasion I chimed in as well
with things I've picked up about Chinese marionettes, especially from
renowned expert in this field, Huang Yi Que.

"The Warlord" series (now with 4 out) has a theme of mathematics so Virginia
goes into some ratio and proportion but I think this is incorporated quite
creatively and does not seem overly distracting or boring the way many
educational books unfortunately seem to me. Nicolas Debon's illustrations
are also very nicely done with attention to technical details that only
puppeteers would notice were right and also a few that aren't but I won't
point these out and besides Nicolas wanted some artistic license.

Digressing back to "Wandering Puppeteer", perhaps vagrant is a more
appropriate term, although it doesn't have the romantic appeal.

>From your fellow wandering puppeteer,

Dmitri Carter
