Drama of Works is back with Carnival of Samhain 2003, a Halloween puppet cabaret for the adult trick-or-treater offering puppets, stilt walking, spooky music, haunting imagery and guaranteeing a memorable post-Samhain evening at the theater. This year proves to be even more exciting than last year’s completely sold-out event!

Carnival of Samhain:
"Step right up! Step right up!" exclaims Samhain’s host, Bone Daddy Jonnyclockworks, "Step right up and let your eyes gaze with wonder upon the various acts of magic, splendor…and danger that are the Carnival of Samhain!

"In one tent – and you don’t even have to peek through the hole in the side – we have dancing girls (what’s a carnival without dancing girls?) – the belly-dancing ladies of Beledi will amaze you with their ever-moving hips and wildly enticing costumes.

"Step into the next tent and feast your eyes on Frida's Lunch! You must see this carnivalesque kitchen commentary, this grotesque expurgation of diet culture and self-denial. (If you thought the dancing girls demeaning, "Crookednose" Emily C. Wilson will quickly put your nose back in joint, but not without a dose of belly laughs!) Come in and see Blue Rose Moon Theater Company perform Raggedybones Gonna Dance Me Out of This Holler, a dark Appalachian folk tale. This company can control shadows and light and weave them into amazing storytelling. This is a shadow puppet piece you don’t want to miss. In another tent see Bah. Bah. Bah. Bah by imnotlost – the New York Post calls them ‘just plain bizarre’ – and you will too, but you must see it to believe it. This piece includes a stilt dance with a giant 8-foot monster baby puppet. Holy moly!

"As a special bonus at the 10pm show you’ll encounter a performance of an unusual kind from alias: BLANK (trombone, puppets, poetry, stilts, live and in the moment) tentatively titled either ‘Color Me Creepy’ or ‘The Insidious Dr. Goo’s Monster Disaster.’ (…don’t ask, just come!)

"Now, I don’t want to start rumors – but I’ve heard on the grapevine that the Ritual Clown might also be heading this way for a surprise appearance. He recently escaped from a mental institution and may need the audience’s help to free himself from his straight jacket. Don’t be alarmed – he may be a little crazed and stomping wildly on his stilts, but really, deep down he’s a fine gentleman.

"Of course, all the while I – Bone Daddy Jonnyclockworks – will be your constant companion on this Carnival journey: amusing you with creepy anecdotes, wooing you with my singing and accordion skills, and maybe even throwing in a puppet or two. Not to mention sweeping up the riff-raff (and making sure none of the acts go on too long). So – what are you waiting for? STEP RIGHT UP!"

Samhain [SOW-en] (www.nobleknights.com/~eagle1/samhain1.htm)
Samhain is the Witches New Year, representing one full turn of the seasonal year. The name Samhain means "Summers End." It was believed that the ghosts of all persons who were destined to die in the coming year could be seen walking through the graveyard at midnight on Samhain. Many of the ghosts were thought to be of an evil nature and so for protection, jack-o-lanterns with hideous candle-lit faces were carved out of pumpkins and carried as lanterns to scare away the malevolent spirits.

Drama of Works (www.dramaofworks.com) New York’s tightly organized satirists" (In Pittsburgh) is known for their innovative works "high on fantastic production value" (Village Voice) that cross the line between actors and puppeteers. "Whatever it is supposed to be, it isn’t boring." (Puppetmaster) Over the last six years they have graced the lower east side (CBGB’s, The Atrium, Clockworks Experimental Puppetry Theater, Los Kabayitos, HERE, Dixon Place, Theater for the New City, Surf Reality, Present Company Theatorium, P.S.122, as well as The Limelight, Ensemble Studio Theater, the Brooklyn Museum of Art and Arts at St. Ann’s), Pittsburgh (Industrial Arts Co-op’s Black Sheep Puppet Festival), Philadelphia (Christ Church as a part of the Fringe Festival and also Puppet Uprising) and Providence (Perishable Theater’s Blood from a Turnip) with their unique brand of theatre: gaining members, fans and supporters along the way. "Drama of Works invites the audience to re-examine their
notions of theatrical structure and method without seeming self-important or compromising accessibility…" Fate has lain before them the task of adapting, reinventing and retelling classic and historical tales with actors and puppets on stage together. "…This company will be around for a number of years to come. If you go see them now, you'll be able to say you knew about them before everybody did." (www.offoffoff.com) Drama of Works is a member of the Puppetry Guild of Greater New York, Puppeteers of America and UNIMA-USA. They are the recipients of two Henson Foundation Grants and an Ensemble Studio Theater/Sloan Project Commission. They have participated in, among others, the O’Neil Puppetry Conference, the Arts at St. Ann’s Puppet Lab, the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade and the American Living Room Series.
