Subject: PUPT: Puppetry slam info
From: Christopher Hudert <heyhoot-AT-mindspring.com>

Hello critters,
I am working towards creating something here in Richmond, VA and maybe in
Northern VA that, as I understand it, would be a Puppetry Slam. Now, having
never been to a Puppetry Slam myself, this is not something that I would
normally get into organizing, but there has been some interest expressed and
think I have a venue that we can use in both locations but I desperately
need more info. In fact I need a LOT more information. Can some of you who
have experienced one, participated in one, and/or been part of the
organizing of them please share as much as you can. I would like both the
pros and cons of your experience.
What worked and what didn't? What would you have done differently? Have you
done this in an area that there was not a strong support of puppetry? We
have several colleges in the area and I think I may be able to get some
participation through them, but where else can I look for performers? I
can't carry this alone, obviously, but how much "staff" do I need to enlist?
Do I need to audition the acts? How loosely does the term Puppetry apply in
a slam? I know the range of puppetry, but how much puppetry need be in a
piece? What is the time frame on a Slam, both for the individual pieces and
the whole night? What limits do I set? What support equipment do I need to
provide? Sound and lights are not much of a problem, but do I need to
provide stages, and if so what kinds? Is there a particular time (both hour
of the day and time of year) that you have found to be better or worse than
another? In the Richmond venue we could sell food and beer. Is that a good
idea or is it asking for trouble? There are lots more questions and surely
some I don't even know to ask yet, that is why I turn to you for help. So,
H-E-L-P?!?!?!
You may post replies to the list if you think they will be of general
interest, or send them directly to me off list.
Also, if you or any one you know might be interested in participating at
any level, be it performing, crew, or audience, please let me know. I am
going to work on the Richmond Slam first and then try to work with someone
in Northern VA to see if we can make one happen up there. Perhaps this will
plant the seeds for future slams in the area. We'll see what happens.

Thanks,
 Christopher
