In regard to the smoky puppet...
If the Citrus product solution does not work, you might look up
"Restoration" companies in the yellow pages.  These are companies that
specialize in helping folks with articles damaged by fire or flood.  Most
have an "ozone chamber" that they can put your puppet in for a few days, and
the odor will be removed.  I've used it for a collection of old books and
theatre programs that I obtained from the estate of a heavy smoker.  They
all came back odor-free, and the cost four a group of small items was
minimal.
