Subject: PUPT: Lightweight positive base forms

Greetings all.

Just to clarify my purpose here, I guess there was some misunderstanding as
to what I intend to do with the base form. Although I have been following
this thread with great interest. Lots of solutions to ther poblems that
night occur! Lots to try!

What I mean to do is make lightweight permanent forms of every mask model I
make, to use as a device onto which I will shape all the following masks of
same model.

This because of the weight and space a plaster copy of my plastalina shape
will take.
If I want to produce more than one mask of same model per day, I have to
use a lot of plastalina, because I would have to sculpt a copy
Plus, I cannot pin my textile in place in plaster.

So, I am looking for a product, textile, or anything non toxic, to use over
my original shape.
This will make a lighweight mask, including a large rim.
It has to be stiff, but not too brittle or breakable.
It has to resist heat, without softening. (I speed dry my masks in the
oven, at around 200F)

I would pierce holes in strategic areas, to temporarily anchor my textile
in place with thread, instead of using T pins on my usual plastalina shape.
And these lightweight "shells" could be piled on top of each other.
Easily carried.

I wonder if I can melt some plastic ustensils or soft drink bottles, to
pour over my baseform.
Anybody ever tried to melt soft plastic? How do I avoid toxic fumes? Will a
double-boiler be hot enough to soften plastic at least to a creamy state?

Another idea is to make a stiffer than wood paper-maché shell. T hick kraft
or watercolor paper + carpenter's glue (cabinet maker's quality). No flex,
and good resistance to heat in the oven. More testing required. I need to
find out if it will withstand repeated use without going more and more
brittle...
