For puppet mechs I usually suggest that people read Michael Brose's excellent "Figure Making Can Be Fun." It's written specifically with Vent doll construction in mind, but many of his techniques can be easily applied to other types of puppet building. You can order it from his website at http://puppetsnprops.homestead.com where he also has a few tutorials from the book available for free and links to additional information. The PofA bookstore carries it as well I believe.

I'd also recommend browsing Chris Hillman's Animatronics links page at http://members.aol.com/c40179/ - it's full of hundreds (maybe thousands) of links to special FX, robotics, animatronics and make-up FX web sites. If the info you need is available online, chances are you'll find it via Chris' site.

As for computer animation, it's really an entirely different discipline than puppet building (although a lot of the basic underlying principals are the same) but most of the larger bookstores like Chapters or Barnes & Noble should have an extensive section of computer animation books. The book you need really depends on the software you are using.

I hope this helps!
