Subject: PUPT: Nude shoulder joints

 Re: Nude shoulder joints
Here's the way I solved it with marionettes: I sculpted the chest piece
leaving a flat circle where the shoulder joint will be. Be sure and not make the
width between shoulders too wide because the upper arm (shoulder) will add to
that width. Incorporate into the upper arm (carved wood or sculpted/cast
piece) a ball with the same diameter as the flat circle in the chest piece.
Cut out the circle to accept the ball to form the joint. Make a ball and
socket joint, using a nail as axle through the ball front to back....drill the
nail hole in the center of the ball. Cut a slot in the ball to allow for
rotation around the toggle bolt next described.
Make a "toggle" bolt out of coathanger wire, with the eye small enuf to
insert into the ball. The long (normally threaded) part of the "toggle bolt"
may be inserted into a short dowel, with hold drilled length wise. At the
opposite end of the wire toggle bolt, bend the wire back onto itself using washers
to prevent the toggle bolt wire from coming out of the dowel. Mount a piece
of wook inside the chest piece far enough back from the circle to allow the
ball to rotate about the toggle and about the nail...This will allow 360 degree
rotation of the upper arm.
Depending upon your skill, you can make a completely invisable joint
similar to a dolls..and if you need more help I posted photos of this joint for a
hip to midrift joint some time ago on my web site: www.jimgamble.com
I am writing this while on tour in Asia...I'm in Bangkok now and do not
have my digital photos with me...hopefully my stuff on the web will help...Jim
